Waitangi Treaty Grounds overlooking Bay of Islands 
Waitangi represents the birthplace of united NZ......Pakeha and Maori. The treaty was signed in 1840

This is the whare runanga....meeting place built 100 years after the signimg of the Treaty

The 35 metre long waka taua (war canoe) built in 1940 for the centenary celebrations carved out of solid kauri. The Maori arrived in NZ (Aoteoroa) in similar vessels from Hawaiki between 940 and 1100AD. The kauri is now protected and can only be cut down for ceremonial waka after the forests were decimated in the early 1900's by pakeha
