We decided to stop over at the smaller Fox Glacier which we heard was more accessible, rather than the more sophisticated and touristy Frans Joseph Glacier.
We chose a camping spot in the Top 10 camp, which certainly had a great mountain view... but it was right next to two heli pads which had flights taking off and landing every 15 minutes from dawn to dusk... so an early start to the day was guaranteed!
Our first outing was to the Lake Matheson, (Reflection Lake), where the snow peaked mountains can be reflected in the still waters of the lake.... when the weather permits ! It did not play ball first time around!
The next morning we walked/tramped up the the Terminal of the glacier, which we learnt has receded 3.5km since the 1970's. The amazing fact about the Fox Glacier is that the terminal is only 250mts above sea level, and it is the only glacier which ends in a temperate rain forest environment.

You've got to be joking...... |
Made it in one piece..... |

The following morning , before we broke camp, we headed back to Lake Matheson, and were treated to the postcard pictures that make it famous!
Had to show it twice!!!! |
